Betsy Heimlich

“There is something mysterious and magical being backstage during a performance.  It is a view that few get to experience.  I have spent my life watching performers from behind the curtain.  The backstage silence envelops you and the blue-black shadows masks your presence.  These paintings examine the people and the moments that surround performance.

I draw on my personal experience, having been exposed to musicians, photographers, poets and works of art starting at the tender age of five.  I never forgot the magical feeling of watching the performance from back stage.  My works appear as dreamlike images in which fiction and reality meet, well-known tropes merge, meanings shift, past and present fuse. Time, sound and memory always play a key role in my paintings.  I want to amplify the astonishment of the spectator.  My hope is that you feel the weight of the magical moment you are witnessing and embrace the silence.”

Betsy Heimlich’s (San Francisco, United States) has been working in the arts for nearly 36 years.  Her traditional training started in the early 80’s at the Art Institute.  She continued her studies in 2009 at The Ohio State University where she received her BFA with a distinction in art.  She received her master’s degree in 2013 and continues to learn and work with artist from all over the world.  Betsy is well versed in painting, photography, drawing and sculpture. When working she considers the viewer and Heimlich tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.

Heimlich currently lives and has worked for 29 years in Columbus, Ohio.
